As any professional bodybuilder knows, your diet is just as important as the training itself in building large muscles. Not only does your diet give your body all the energy it needs to fulfil your training, it also gives you all the nutrients it needs to be healthy and so that your organs perform as they should.
One of the most important parts of the bodybuilding diet is to have plenty of protein. Protein helps the body to build muscle, burn off fat and make sure your tissue is repairing itself as you train. Experts say that you should ideally be eating one gram of protein for every pound you weigh. Plus when bodybuilding, it is advised to have one and a half grams per pound you weigh each and every day. Protein can be found in lean meats, fish and milk.
Just as important as protein, carbohydrates are essential in a bodybuilders diet. Carbs give you the fuel your body needs to do all the training. But there are good carbs and bad carbs, just like there are good fats and bad fats. Complex carbohydrates are recommended for bodybuilders and they can be found in fibre and starchy foods such as rice, pasta, whole grain bread and in potatoes.
A common misconception is that all bodybuilders avoid fats, when in truth this is really not the case at all. Fats are very important so that our bodies function as they should. They are important for many organs to work correctly. As we have mentioned above, there are good fats and bad fats. They most important thing in consuming them is to eat the good ones and avoid the bad ones. Some of the good ones are unsaturated fats, such as olive oil. It is saturated fats that cause major heart conditions as they clog up the arteries in the body.
Next, you should make sure you consume fibre in your diet. This makes sure your body is flushing out any impurities and also helps you lose weight, as it keeps the body regular.
Last thing you shouldn’t forget is to have regular vegetables and the occasional fruit. This gives your body essential nutrients and vitamins. Try not to eat too much fruit as it can contain a lot of sugar and may also make you retain water.
By following a well balanced bodybuilding diet, it can account for 90% of your success in building muscle whilst still losing any excess fat. Mostly, enjoy your training and look after your body!
